In our project, Found in Translation, we research language and quirks of language normally overlooked, which perks up our interest or frustration. Inspired by our own frustrations, curiosity and flashes of serendipity, we try to capture and analyse moments when we feel like our language falls short in its expressive abilities or abilities to connect people. We collect our findings in an archive, filled with documents and notes.

We aim with our project to explore, expose and question language norms. Each of us have our own experiences with language, with being misunderstood or lacking the words to express ourselves, so we aim to materialize these experiences in the form of an archive.

The archive is made up of entries, consisting of a primary document of interest – an excerpt from a movie script, a screenshot of some comments – and notes, observations, musings of the archivist layered on top. Each group member approaches an entry in a different way, with different points of interest. Yet, the entries, when put together in a cohesive whole, still connect to each other, inviting the viewer to create their own narrative. Humans are often compelled to rationalize everything; therefore, this archive is also an attempt in putting the experiences logged into the entries, often with odd primary documents or personal thoughts, in a more distant context, in an attempt to find the underlying logic behind everything.
